Religious Women Sue Beit Shemesh City Hall Over Gender Discrimination

bshRepresented by the Reform Movement’s Religious Action Center, four observant women from Beit Shemesh are suing the city for failing to act to prevent illegal gender discrimination in chareidi areas. They explain that the signs compelling women to dress a certain way and walk on a designated area of sidewalk are illegal and the city closes a blind eye instead of taking action.

The women detail how they removed one such sign which was immediately replaced by local residents all the while City Hall sits by and tolerates the law-breaking activity that results in gender discrimination.

  1. The machlokes about the street signs designating which side of the street to walk on is pure machlokes for the sake of machlokes. Those signs were up for years and nobody really paid any attention to them. Women/girls walked on whichever side of the street they wanted and nobody said anything.

Only when they were removed did they become an issue.

Hashem should help us avoid machlokes.
