Yahadut Hatorah Cannot Accept Kandel Draft Plan

After sitting in negotiations for hours on Thursday night, Yahadut Hatorah MKs appear to share the position of their Shas counterparts, unable to accept Likud’s Kandel drat plan for chareidi induction into the IDF or national service.

The Yahadut Hatorah MKs met with Prof. Eugene Kandel, the father of the plan, who spent at least three hours detailing it to them. At one point, Yaakov Litzman pulled out a 200 shekel note, which bears the image of Zalman Shazar explaining “Do you know what Shazar’s plan for sharing the burden was? That we must all share in the burden of limud Torah” adding, the words ושננתם לבניך appear on the bank note as well.

As elected officials enter into another week of coalition negotiations the chareidim are signaling they are unable to approve the Kandel plan for chareidi induction into the military.

  1. No plan that requires people to serve in the army will be acceptable.

The bottom line is that a certain percentage will refuse to serve regardless of incentives or accomodation. This includes perhaps 20% of Hareidim men (some of whom are not full time learning, but are saying so to avoid having to tell the government to its face that the government are apikoresim and the war is contrary to halacha), as well as at least 90% of Hareidi women (who are also going to be drafted according to Israeli law). Even if a deal is reached with pro-zionist yeshiovos (i.e. those who accept and are often dependent on government funding), the anti-zionists will make a point of refusing to serve in the army. See a public display of resistance from perhaps 100000 people will more or less force the remaining hareidim to refuse since they won’t want to look like they are “selling out” in return for money.

  2. No. 1, is it in honor of Purim that you’ve downgraded Israel’s conscript soldiers to non-people? Can’t you leave it at non-Jews? As for 90% of Hareidi women who’ll be drafted according to Israeli law, that’s definitely a Purim farce. Israeli law exempts frum women on their say-so. So who are the other 10%? And as for “selling out in return for money,” what else is selling out done for?
