Bat Ayin Underground Leader Gamliel Scheduled for Release

The Israeli Prison Service parole board decided that Ofir Gamliel, a member of the “Bat Ayin Underground” who has been serving a 15 year prison sentence since 2002, will be released after his prison sentence was reduced by a third for good behavior. The decision to release him comes despite ardent objections from the ISA (Israel Security Agency – Shin Bet).

Readers are reminded that when the government voted to carry out the Gilad Shalit prisoner release, Justice Minister Yaakov Ne’eman announced Jewish prisoners would also be released, but to date, this has not occurred.

What assisted Gamliel greatly in persuading the parole board was the backing of former IDF Chief Rabbi Brigadier-General (reserves) Avichai Ronsky, who maintains contact with Gamliel. Two additional Bay Ayin Underground members, Yarden Morag and Shachar Dvir have already been released from their prison sentences.

An order was issued to delay carrying out the release due to the ISA objections. The district court will rule on the matter in a week or so.
