Call to Suspend Israel Radio Host for Bias Against Chareidim

Israel’s Media Watch has filed a complaint with Israel Broadcasting Authority against Israel Radio host Aryeh Golan, who the organization feels acted inappropriately to put it mildly during an interview with Yahadut Hatorah’s Meir Porush. Media Watch feels Golan should be suspended for one week for his unacceptable unprofessional behavior.

Media Watch feels that Golan’s comments “were too aggressive and bordered on racism against chareidim.”

The interview addressed the sharing the burden issue, the drafting of chareidim into the IDF or national service. Media Watch feels the interviewer lacked professionalism, was too aggressive, stated his personal opinion, and simply lacked professionalism as Aryeh Golan launched a personal attack against Porush. Media Watch explains that Golan works for the state-run radio station and is therefore compelled to keep his feelings to himself, and not use Israel Radio as a forum to launch a verbal attack against those with whom he disagrees.

Media Watch Executive Director Prof. Eli Pollack explained “The matter of sharing the burden is complex and carries with it many implications. Mr. Golan’s job is to ask the difficult questions, even irritating ones, but he is compelled to refrain from using the public microphone to promote his own personal agenda. This is equivalent to the theft of a public resource. His behavior is not in line with the Code of Ethics of the Israel Broadcasting Authority.”

The IBA has yet to respond to the report and statements from Media Watch.

  1. This article would be more informative if it quoted specific language from Mr. Aryeh Golan and then reported specifically what Media Watch considers factually wrong or otherwise inappropriate. The article is redundant when it says that “Media Watch feels the interviewer lacked professionalism … and simply lacked professionalism as Aryeh Golan launched a personal attack against Porush.” What words show that Mr. Golan was unprofessional?

And just to be clear, I do not know what Mr. Golan said or who he is or what his position is on the share-the-burden issue.

  2. I TOTALLY agree with nfgo3 on this. I would only add that the article is a great example of how Yeshiva World News lacks professionalism.

  3. Golan is a bully as you can see in his interview with Bennet, Settler leaders and most right-wing, religious individuals. Glad that he will receive a week long vacation.

  4. To No. 3: I cannot see that Golan is a bully in his interview with Bennet … if you or YWN does not give me a link to the interview or a transcript of the interview.
