Persons close to the head of Yad Sarah former Jerusalem Mayor Rabbi Uri Lupoliansky are beginning to evaluate the political climate for him to run in the upcoming mayoral race scheduled for October 2013. Persons close to the Degel Hatorah affiliated former mayor explain Lupoliansky was forced to step down due to an internal rotation agreement, and now that they have seen chareidi voting statistics in the election for the 19th Knesset, they are encouraged regarding a comeback by the mayor. They feel that if he runs he will win if backed by the entire chareidi tzibur in the capital.
Internal efforts are ongoing as the Lupoliansky camp has already began probing the level of support his reelection bid would receive from Yahadut Hatorah and Shas. Lupoliansky supporters feel the former mayor enjoys more widespread support than any other chareidi candidate, including chareidi members of the Jerusalem city council today.
The daily Maariv reports that officials close to the former mayor feel the fact he is still on trial in the Holyland real estate affair involving former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert do not prevent him from running for the top spot in Jerusalem City Hall.
