Lapid: I Won’t Be A Fig Leaf in a Right-Wing Chareidi Government

Speaking with Israel Radio on Monday morning 25 Teves 5773, Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid indicated he is unlikely to join a coalition government without Tzipi Livni and her The Movement party, explaining “I won’t be a fig leaf for a right-wing chareidi coalition”.

Lapid explained that he has an agenda, to help the middle class and to focus on social economic issues. He added that while his party would join a Likud-led coalition under the proper circumstances, he was not about to join to give legitimacy to the coalition, which would then continue to fund chareidim and continue with the agenda of the president administration.

When asked to state definitively if his inclusion in a coalition was contingent on Livni’s party, he stated “no”, but added “I am not afraid to sit in opposition and that is what we will do is left without an alternative”.

  1. I understand his concern. The religious parties are out only to help the ultra Orthodox and do not care about ‘social issues’ of the secular. But the ultra Orthodox parties were formed only because the secular parties care nothing about the needs of the Orthodox.

So which came first, the secular disdain of Orthodox needs or the secular parties refusal to sit in a coalition with religious? I would opt for the first.
