One of the city’s largest hospitals is one step closer to being fully operational. Officials say Bellevue Hospital is once again receiving ambulances.

The staff has been accepting non-critical patients since Monday.

The hospital was evacuated at the height of Hurricane Sandy, which flooded its basement and knocked out the electrical system.

“It’s another step to showing that we are back up and running and being able to help our community, to take care of the patients who have been relying on us all this time,” said Dr. Joseph Carter, associate medical director at Bellevue Hospital. “It’s also important to the surrounding hospitals because it allows us to take care of patients so they’re not quite so overwhelmed.”

Hospital officials said they also restored several other clinical services like radiology and mammographies.

They expect everything to be up and running by February.
