With snow and mixed precipitation arriving this week, the New York State Thruway Authority is ready to deploy hundreds of employees, a range of plows and other snow removal equipment and thousands of tons of rock salt along with a new anti-icing mix of sugar beet juice and brine used to pre-treat roadways.
Officials said the beet juice and brine mixture has in recent years proven to be an effective pre-treatment to prevent icing. In some instances, the pre-treating can be done during normal work hours and reduce the need for overtime work, they said.
In the event of emergency, breakdown, or minor accident, especially during inclement weather, motorists are reminded not to stop in travel lanes, but rather if the car can be driven, travel to the nearest exit or safe locations, pull over, turn on four-way flashers, and tie a cloth to the driver side mirror and wait in the vehicle if you need assistance.
During inclement weather, motorists will be advised of closures and delays through electronic signboards along the Thruway, TRANSalerts, and the Thruway Highway Advisory Radio, which broadcasts traffic advisories, road conditions and safety tips to travelers 24 hours a day.
Along the Tappan Zee Bridge corridor, the advisory radio is available on 530 AM; and in the Newburgh and Kingston areas, motorists can tune in 1610AM.
