New York City bus, subway and commuter rail passengers will soon have to pay more to ride.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority board approved a slate of fare hikes Wednesday. They’ll take effect March 1.
Base subway and bus fares will rise by 25 cents, to $2.50, though some paper single-ride tickets will cost $2.75. A monthly MetroCard pass will cost nearly 8 percent more, or $112.
Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North rail fare hikes average about 9 percent.
A dozen members of the public pleaded against the fare increases. Several board members characterized the hikes as a move made necessary by insufficient state support and a lack of other revenue.
The increases are to bring in an additional $450 million a year for the nation’s largest transit system.

Thanks to all the fare hikes my neighbor who has a bicycle store told me that his business is booming. He was never so busy as recently, he sells more bikes in one week then he used to sell in a month. Now with another hike he thinks he will have to rent a bigger place to accommodate the large volume of customers. So more people will switch from mass transit to bikes. But for me it is a problem because I drive a car and see more and more bike riders on the street and they are careless when riding between cars.
Has a fare hike ever been disapproved ?? don’t think so.
complain all you want , its still a bargain for $2.75 to go from boro park to midtown
Did Joseph Lahota push this thru before he resigns on Friday? The man wants to run for Bloomberg’s position as mayor in 2013.
Always start at the top to reduce expenses: Lahoto’s salary, retirement benefits, fringe benefits (medical, etc.) ; top executives’ (10- 15) salaries. etc.; salaries and benefits of top union officials (provided by dues of employees, (who also get big salaries).
We never hear of big shots – and not so big shots – getting decreased salaries and benefits to AVOID increased fares!
Who is diligently looking into the budgets and actual operating expenses within the MTA?
Mayerfreund – who is your neighbor that sells bikes? would like to purchase one.
