Bar Ilan University has come under fire after an undergraduate student posted a complaint on the university’s Facebook page, explaining a colleague of his was removed from a class for not wearing a yarmulke. The response to the comment gave support to the demand made by Dr. Chaim Talbi, simply stating this is the policy of the university when it comes to religious studies.
Following the involvement of the media, the university was forced to defend itself, explaining the students opting to take the class were informed that wearing a kippa is mandatory, in line with university policy for classes containing religious study. University officials explain this obligation stems from the Jewish tradition maintained on campus and in line with the university’s values.
