Speaking with Channel 1 Evening News on Tuesday, the eve of 28 Kislev 5773, Shas co-leader Aryeh Deri stated that The Movement leader Tzipi Livni does not “get it” regarding the chareidim and limud torah. “Like it or not, the talmidim who learn torah are sharing in the burden and that is a fact”.
“Does anyone dare to try to compel Israeli Arabs to serve in the IDF, of course not” and that is why such issues must be resolved by mutual understanding he explains, not by attempting to compel a segment of the population to act against its beliefs. Deri explains that Livni continues to sing the song regarding the IDF draft but she is unrealistic and her methodology will never lead to solving the issues that divide society.
“Those learning must continue learning – simple as that, and those who don’t learn, let the IDF prepare to accept them and let them serve in appropriate units that accommodate their lifestyle like Nachal Chareidi.”

The simplest solution to this and a dozen other serious social and economic problems in Israel is to abolish the draft and have a volunteer army. What I do not understand is why no politician is willing to publicly discuss this? In fact for us to continue to advance socially and economically it is critical that the draft be abolished.
While Israel can be easily defended by a small professional army with volunteer well compensated reserves, the primary goal of the army has always been to build a modern society. That is why they try to break frum soldiers. For the zionists to give up their goal of building a society in Eretz Yisrael that is homeland for Jews that will be free from the yoke of Torah (the meaning of “Am Hofshi” in the zionist anthem), would be like asking us to give up Torah.
Assuming the zionists don’t manage to get the yishuv destroyed, eventually they will be forced to agree to having a frum “medinah”, meaning an army (and society) the hareidi Jews would be willing to participate in (and one that the hilonim will be greatly displeased by). Deri thinks he can lead Israel into that sort of situation, which is probably why he is hated by the hilonim.
