Peace-Making Efforts Between Aryeh Deri and Rav Mazuz

The machlokes that existed has kept Aryeh Deri from speaking or meeting with HaGaon HaRav Meir Mazuz, Rosh Yeshivat Kisei Rachamim Bnei Brak for many years but that changed on Sunday, 25 Kislev 5773, as the Shas co-leader visited the rav’s home.

The rav reportedly told Deri he is waiting a number of years for this, and received his guest warmly. Deri is quoted as saying “Baruch Hashem I merited returning to the Shas leadership.”

Rav Mazuz discussed the dangers of the next government, the ongoing efforts to “destroy yeshivos” by compelling talmidim and avreichim to serve in the IDF, seeking to bring an end to the arrangement by which bnei torah receive a draft deferment.

Deri is quoted as reassuring the rav that he and his colleagues remain committed to preventing this from chas v’sholom becoming a reality, explaining this is his position and responsibility, to emerge with a strong party following the elections towards preventing the government’s plan.

  1. The headline is misleading, implying that there was a rift between Rav Mazuz and Deri, which needs peace-making. As the article almost-but-not-quite makes clear, R Mazuz always supported Deri and was trying to bring him back, and now he’s succeeded.
