MK Kirshenbaum Accuses Gafne of Major Allocation, Primarily for Chareidim

The chairman of the Knesset Finance Committee, MK (Yahadut HaTorah) Moshe Gafne has allocated 538 million NIS for the Housing Ministry and Israel Lands Administration ahead of the national election in Shevat, explaining most of the funds are designated for “national priority areas”, including the Gaza border communities.

MK (Yisrael Beitenu) Fania Kirshenbaum is not convinced however and she voted against the allocation, accusing Gafne of “underhanded opportunism” ahead of elections.

Housing Ministry officials responded to Kirshenbaum’s statement, explaining in this case, she is incorrect, stating most of the funds in this case are not for chareidim, but earmarked for sectors including IDF veterans and minority citizens.

  1. This is the result of the Israeli system of allocating ministries, and their discretionary spending authority, to politicians who use the post for patronage. Similar problems arise in any country with a proportional voting system, and a “cabinet” rather than a strong executive.

  2. If only that MK were right. Our representatives should allocate Jewish money for Torah purposes only, not for nightclubs sports etc.
