More on Discrimination in Beis Yaakov Schools

Last Thursday, 8 Kislev 5773, a number of parents, Ashkenazim and Sephardim whose daughters were not accepted to a Beis Yaakov appealed the decision. Following the appeal, the Ashkenazi girls were accepted while the Sephardim were not.

Ladaat.net reports it spoke with a “senior official”, a member of the Beis Yaakov acceptance committee that places students in schools. He confirmed of late a number of appeals were filed in some areas, primarily Yerushalayim and Bnei Brak. The parents alleged they were not able to resister their daughters in a local Beis Yaakov School. This appeal was filed with local officials and the Ministry of Education. The vaad official is quoted anonymously as saying “what is infuriating is the fact that the Ashkenazim who appealed were accepted while the Sephardim were not.”

Cited is a case in point, “A well known Jerusalem high school” which decided not to accept six Sephardi girls while another school accepted two Ashkenazi girls. Similar cases are reported in Bnei Brak and Kiryat Sefer.

The senior official is quoted as adding that the vaad objected because even the politicians remain silent, doing nothing despite realizing the Sephardi girls remain home, without a school or studies. The official turned to a senior rov in the hope of enlisting his assistance in the matter.

  1. not as simple as it seems. There are plenty of amazing amazing sephardi high schools. There is no reason for a parent to push their kids into ashkenazi schools where they end up being complexed and different. Let the sephardim go to the sephardi schools and ashkenazim to their own. It has been proven to be much healthier for these girls to stick to their own. Life is very very different; mentality is very very different, everything is so different for these two types that it’s healthiest they stick to their own. It takes no good it for anyone. Starting from the ashkenzi minhagim learnt s.a. not leaving even a tefach of hair out of your snood while sefardim think it’s right as long as there’s no sheitel. Down till a huge percentage of sefardim intermingling with their non religious family members and having a certain over-exposure to discussions that aren’t accepted in the frum chareidi world. The differences are huge. Healthiest is for everyone to go to their own type school and the principals on the acceptance boards understand and know this very well. The sefardim have some amazing schools.

  2. To GEULA!

    Couple things:

1)What sources did you use???? Where does it say that Sfaradim are allowed to leave a “Tefach”??? THAT OUT RIGHT NOT TRUE!!!!!!!! Thats loshon horah n motzie shame rah!

    2) Ashkenazim DO have non frum reletives to! And if anything, Sfaradim that are not From are WAYYY frumer than Ashkenazim that are not Frum!

Just dont forget why the Bais Hamikdash was destroyed… SINAS CHINAM! a simple example is the way you make a difference between us Yidden!

  3. “By geula” your post is false from the beginning to the end were do you get this that they are best kept seperate are you some kind of Jewish racist? The fact is that all the the United States Sefardic and ashcanazic girls go to the same Bais yaakov’s with out any problems and contrary to your beliefs it’s much more healthy for ashcanazic and Sefardic students to mix

  4. Discrimination cannot be justified based on someone’s perception of “what’s best” for the other person. Shouldn’t Klal Yisrael make an effort to unify..on all fronts, not only on the battlefield when we are forged together in defending ourselves.? Yes, there are differences between Askenazim and Sefardim. However, with Yiras Shamayim and Hishtadlus we should be able to find a way to accomodate all sectors.

  5. So, different mentalities??? There are two categories. (1)Those who are genuine and who fear Hashem, and (2) Other. Put in your hat for Hashem and His people. Watch the Lipa Mizrach video.

  6. All NY Beis Yakov’s accept both Ashkenizic and Sefardic Girls… Israel you got a serious problem with polarization and sterotypes. Start learning some skills from us in America.

  7. Cited is a case in point, “A well known Jerusalem high school” which decided not to accept six Sephardi girls while another school accepted two Ashkenazi girls.

Talk about flim-flam. What is this supposed to mean? One school does one thing, another school does another; one school found extra room, while another did not. Where’s the discrimination?

Also, we’re talking about appeals for students who were originally rejected. Did it even occur to whoever wrote this piece that maybe the appeals that were accepted had merit and the ones that were rejected did not? What law of nature says that meritorious appeals must be distributed equally by ethnicity?

  8. #8, All Israeli Beis Yaakovs also accept both Ashkenazic and Sefardic girls. The tension only arises when Ashkenazi schools try to limit the Sefardim to 30% or 40%, or even 50%, so that the character of the school can stay the same, and they’re told no, even if 80% of applicants are Sefardim you have to accept that. Which Sefardi school would accept so many Ashkenazim that it was no longer a Sefardi school?
