PA (Palestinian Authority) media reports that the military wing of the Islamic Jihad organization claims to have amassed information on at least 100 IDF soldiers, including their rank, position in the IDF, cellular telephone number and other personal data. Members of the Jerusalem Brigade displayed documents, claiming to have gathered information on soldiers. Some of the documents are from June and July this year, while others from 2011, pertaining to the 271st Battalion. One document from May 2012 addresses the use of new weapons and training events to increase proficiency with the weapon.
Yediot Achronot quotes one of the soldiers, Ro’i, who verified the information displayed about him was indeed accurate. He explains that some of the information may have been hacked from Google Docs.
IDF intelligence officials report that some of the phone numbers shown by the Jerusalem Brigade were uploaded to the internet by a reservist, against regulations. Just earlier this month, during Operation Pillar of Defense, IDF intelligence officials warned that some of what they saw on Facebook pages could be used to benefit the enemy, explaining during time of war, the enemy is especially busy seeking information on the internet.
The IDF spokesman responds by stating it is aware of the ongoing efforts to access military documents and classified information and the appropriate security officials have been made aware of recent events – adding significant efforts are made to protect classified military information pertaining to personnel and operations.
