ISRAEL: Not Everyone Favors Exclusively Chareidi Areas

A Union of Local Councils poll show that 28% of Israelis oppose exclusive chareidi areas and 54% of respondents would not like having a chareidi neighbor – showing chareidim are not the most popular sector of Israeli society when one looks outside that tzibur. The poll adds that only 2% of Israelis oppose having an Ethiopian neighbor, and there no one minds a dati leumi, Sephardi, Ashkenazi or a person maintaining a to’eva lifestyle neighbor. The poll was taken ahead of the “twin cities” convention being held in Germany.

58% of respondents plan to vote in the January 2013 general election while 13% admit they will not or remain uncertain at present.

Regarding social economic protests and boycotts, Israelis under the age of 35 do not believe the objective was accomplished.

Regarding sharp cuts in the nation’s defense budget, 73% are opposed, even when the monies are being earmarked for cultural events.

The poll appears in Yisrael HaYom, which does not state which population sectors were included among respondents, age, nationalist, how many or the margin of error.

  1. The whole idea of zionism was the extinction of the hareidi lifestyle. It’s even in their national anthem. This is the inherent contradiction in zionism. If the zionists can not reconcile living in a Jewish state, they are probably doomed.

  2. This is what we get when we let extremists in our communities do what they want.
Instead of being and example that shem shomayim mes’haeiv al yodenu where we get the opposite.

  3. Guess they want them to live in the Mediterranean Sea just like the arabs! Donr have your own neighborhood (ghetto) and dont live next to me! (I haye you!)

  4. Hmmmm… They don’t want Haredi neighbors, but they also don’t want Haredim to not be their neighbors. They just want us to leave…

  5. Many secular Israelis have little or no positive exposure to chareidim. I run into this at work all the time. People are shocked that I am educated, tolerant and normal. For many, their only exposure comes from the media or negative experiences when visiting chareidi communities where they did not have positive experiences.

If we, as a community, don’t start interacting positively with others they won’t want to live near us. When they see what happens in Bet Shemesh, they fear the same extremism in their own communities.

  6. #6 Perhaps you would like to explain. SInce many rockets have hit areas of BeerSHeva, Ashdod and Netivot where the communities are frum.

As a Charedi I like living in a mixed neighborhood rather than a polarized ghetto. Try Raanana, Rechovot, areas near Sharei CHesed, Ramat Eshkol, and the old Bayit Vegan. Let us try living together..

  7. The news media is so bias it is not funny. It is so anti charedi; however the general population is not as bad as the media says it is. The leftist news gave and I repeat gave obama the election since it was his mouth piece Less than one week after election and you see the chicken coming home to roost. he is trying not to take responsibility for the 4 killed in Benghazi. The left news in Israel does the same cover up for their crookedness. Look at Olmert; he gets off and the former president goes to jail. Olmert should really be in Jail and not trying to make a come back

  8. It is important for us to understand that the people who are in control in Eretz Yisrael regard us as “their misfortune”. The Religious Zionists have a mirage that Eretz Yisrael is controlled by Jews who are fairly religious and cherish the idea of living in a Jewish state. The reality is that the ruling class perceives us as their principal enemy, sees zionism as a movement to free Jews from the “yoke of Torah”, and would rather see a Palestinian state than a Jewish one.
