You’ve probably never thought about it. But every year, dozens of people die from this during the winter.
The culprit is none other than carbon monoxide. How?
Carbon monoxide has been called the “silent killer,” as it is a colorless, odorless, tasteless — and toxic – gas that causes people to lose consciousness in minutes.
The threat of carbon monoxide poisoning is real. You can’t see, smell, or taste the gas but it could kill.
Before starting your vehicle after the snow stops, be sure to clear off the exhaust area, even if you think there is no snow in the tailpipe.
Although you might not see it, there could be snow blocking the tailpipe, causing the toxic fumes to remain inside the vehicle.
Makes sure to send this info to your friends and family!
#BPDWinterStormSafetyAlert: When shoveling out your car, go stern to stem. Start in the back and move forward clearing all snow from your car’s tailpipe. A clogged tailpipe can have lethal consequences forcing carbon monoxide into the passenger compartment of your car. pic.twitter.com/eYkDSI15cA

Another important tip to help your car start, make sure your front grill and the little gap between the hood and fender are clear of snow as well. When the engine starts it needs oxygen or air to enable combustion.
