The Jerusalem Foundation on Sunday dedicated a statue of British wartime leader Sir Winston Churchill as a tribute to his support of Israel. The new statue will be unveiled in the Moshe Montefiore Garden in proximity to the King David Hotel, with the hotel being the site of the Lechi attack against the British during British Mandate Period.
Not everyone is in agreement, citing how the British leader turned Jewish refugees around, unwilling to permit them to make their way to the shores of Palestine. Then again, there are those who cite his role in the Balfour Declaration, and the staunch British support for the creation of the Jewish homeland.
Quoted in the daily Yisrael HaYom newspaper, MK Yitzchak Herzog feels the time for the dedication is most appropriate as Churchill led the defeat against the Nazis and today, Israel and the Western world finds itself threatened by Iran and global terror. Herzog also feels it is most appropriate the statue was sculptured by Oscar Nemon, one of the greats in the 20th Century and himself a Holocaust survivor.

Churchill upheld the White Paper, which forbade Jews from coming into Israel, especially so during the Holocaust. Yes, tens of thousands of Jews died through his actions. I guess his statue will make a nice spittoon.
