Poll: 24-26 Seats for Olmert in Election

According to a Yisrael HaYom report quoting aides to former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, if he returns to the political arena to head a party, he would earn 24-26 mandates in the upcoming general elections. This is based on Olmert running with former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and opposition leader MK Shaul Mofaz. The report states that former IDF Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi would also be on that slate.

Close associates of the former prime minister report Mr. Olmert is weighing his options and at present the odds of his return are 50:50. If the group moves to form a new party then Mofaz, who currently heads Kadima, would most likely not be included since most feel he would opt to remain as head of Kadima.

Olmert over recent days has been meeting with different political figures and today, Tuesday 30 Tishrei 5773; he is scheduled to meet with Tzipi Livni, the former head of Kadima.

  1. Why would Mofaz and Livni (and Yachomovich) give up their careers to be second fiddle to Olmert, particularly since they would be agreeing to let Olmert be opposition leader, since even allied, they are unlikely to “win” the election.

Note: 26 seats for a center-left coalition would mean that the right-win had an overwhelming victory. If his polls, which in Israel are worth very little, indicated he might have 50 seats – that’s interesting. Remember that the Center-Left used to get 70-90 seats
