Rubashkin’s Attorney, Nat Lewin: Ami’s Person of the Year

Though the Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal regarding the 27-year prison sentence meted out to Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, his attorney Nat Lewin told Ami Magazine that he will not give up.

Lewin’s daughter and law partner, Alyza Lewin, told Ami, “My father has devoted his life to battling injustice. It is a deeply ingrained part of his personality. When he feels that someone has been wronged, he does not give up—even in the face of what may appear to be insurmountable odds. When one avenue appears blocked, he looks for and finds another approach. The Supreme Court’s denial of certiorari is deeply disappointing, but from my father’s perspective, it is not the end of the road. He has identified an additional legal avenue to challenge the unfair trial and will continue to work to rectify what he believes is the worst case of injustice he has seen in his career.”

For this relentless pursuit of justice for Jewish people; for his unyielding advocacy for Jewish causes; for being America’s foremost defender of the civil rights of observant Jews for decades, at a time when observant Jews are the one remaining community that is openly discriminated against; and for having more confidence in us than we often had in ourselves; Washington’s star attorney Nathan Lewin, defender of the Jewish faith, is Ami’s 5772 Person of the Year.

  1. “at a time when observant Jews are the one remaining community that is openly discriminated against”

Get real. Stop promoting this paranoia. Observant Jews have it better today than they ever did throughout their entire history. Please stop promoting fear and hatred.

In this vast majority of cases Orthodox Jews get a fair trial and a just verdict. One or two cases of excessive punishment is not open discrimination against Observant Jews. There are many non-Jews who suffer from apparent diproportinate sentancing also.

  2. I amcurious as to why Ami magazine deems it necessary to feature a person of the year contest. Is this idea not derived from Time magazine? Is this a Jewish concept?

  3. The American government is held in disgust by all justice minded people after such a miscarriage of justice.

It is very strange that this man should get a sentence that is not in keeping with his ‘crime’.

  4. #5 lazerc,

The American government is held in high esteem and regard by all “justice minded people”.

It is a great “medinah shel chessed” where all Jews are treated with respect and dignity. It is a country that has enabled and aided in the rebirth of Torah and has been a strongest defender and supporter of Israel. It is the greatest country in the world.

Keep the law and you won’t go to Jail. Rubashkin’s sentence seems excessive but it is the exception not the rule.

  5. “…the one remaining community that is openly discriminated against” This statement is simply false, and a shame that Ami magazine, a respectable publication, writes such nahrishkeit. Jews enjoy remarkable success in America, and orthodox Jews find themselves placed among the highest of positions in America, including some in the Obama administration, senators, congressmen, etc. Moreover, many professionals including myself are B’H granted no difficulties whatsoever with Shabbos and other religious observance, something almost unheard of 50 years ago. It is not to say that there are not individual cases of problems, but to write such nonsense is offensive to those of us who live as frum yidden every day in the business or professional world.
