Former US Ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk was interviewed on CBS’ Face the Nation, addressing the Iranian threat against Israel. Indyk stated that he believes the United States will go to war against Iran next year.
He feels that there is no much time remaining before Iran has a nuclear weapon, adding “Israel is very nervous over the deterioration in its neighborhood. They see from a much closer perspective and that combines as the prime minister put it, the race of Iran for nuclear capabilities.”
He addresses the concerns regarding Syria and the volatile situation in that country and the threat along Israel’s northern border.
Despite what most believe, Indyk feels the gap between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and US President Barak Obama is not that significant, reminding his audience of the White House’s commitment not to permit Iran to acquire nuclear weaponry.
He did state however that he feels Mr. Netanyahu’s demands for a US ‘red line’ against Iran was “unreasonable”.
“That is an unreasonable requirement. The idea of putting out a public red line in effect issuing an ultimatum is something that no president would do. If you noticed, Governor Romney is not putting out a red line; Senator McCain didn’t, either. And neither is Bibi Netanyahu for that matter, in terms of Israel’s own actions.”
Indyk added that events in Egypt are also worrisome as the peace treaty signed over three decades ago may begin coming apart.
He feels that all of these events have the prime minister nervous, hence his audible statements.
