Yana Gorelik, the Canadian woman who visited Israel for a family simcha and arrested for being AWOL from the IDF was released.
Officials on Sunday, erev Rosh Hashanah 5773 announced she was being released before yomtov begins after serving about 11 days in military lockup. She was let go during the morning hours and plans to spend Rosh Hashanah at the home of an aunt in Bat Yam.
Ms. Gorelick was taken into custody upon arriving in Ben-Gurion International Airport because 12 years ago, at the age of 17, she did not take care of filing for her IDF status when she and her family moved to Canada. Gorelik maintained she tried doing so at Israeli embassies, but was told she had nothing to worry about.
When she arrived for the family wedding she learned the information given to her by consular officials was inaccurate and she was carted off to military prison from the airport.
