Knesset Speaker Meets with Heads of Cypriot and Greek Parliaments in Trilateral Meeting Focused on Regional Coopertion


The heads of parliament of Cyprus, Greece, and Israel, Demetris Syllouris, Nikolaos Voutsis, and Yuli Yoel Edelstein, respectively, expressed satisfaction over the results of their 2nd Trilateral Meeting on Thursday in Nicosia. The three heads of their respective parliaments signed an agreement outlining future cooperation and collaboration between the countries in a number of areas.

Speaker of the Knesset Yuli Edelstein said: “We give the utmost importance to partnerships, especially with regards to partnerships with our neighboring countries.”

Sources at the trilateral meetings expressed “the importance of parliamentary cooperation between Cyprus, Greece and Israel,” and added that “the cooperation is founded upon shared values and principles, to the benefit of our respective countries and peoples and to the benefit of peace, stability and prosperity in the region.”

Among the areas of collaboration that will take place between the countries that were outlined in the agreement included, use of water resources, climate change, innovations, research in various fields and educational reforms. Additionally, the agreement will allow for a transfer of information pertaining to the professional dealings and handlings of the parliamentary systems in each of the countries, as well as the establishment of joint debate between the three governing bodies.

Closing the meeting, the President of the House of Representatives of Cyprus Demetris Syllouris said “we look forward with interest to the upcoming trilateral summit of the governments of our countries, which will be held in Nicosia on December 7, 2017.”

“We expect that during this meeting significant progress will be made in the cooperation of Cyprus, Greece, and Israel, between our three countries, in the same way as the previous three summits, which spurred our parliamentary meetings,” he concluded.
