Batei Warsaw (Meah Shearim) resident Shalom Baruch Rust is not taking his losses quietly. He has filed an 88,000 NIS lawsuit against police for damaging his property, causing him to miss a flight and other police actions that have led to monetary loss.
Rust is in the midst of his criminal trial, where he faces charges of trespassing, assault, threatening others and more.
An arrest warrant was issued against Rust, granted by the court after police explained they fear he is a flight risk. Two days before Shavuos, Rust headed to the airport for a flight to Uman for yomtov. His attorney explained that Rust was never informed that a warrant was issued against him and he was not informed that he may not leave the country.
He was arrested at Ben-Gurion International Airport before he could get on the flight. His attorney decried the actions of police, questioning why his client had to be placed in handcuffs and shackles at the airport “like a common criminal”.
The Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court ordered Rust released with restrictions after Rust told the court he would appear at trial legal proceedings. His bail was set at 2,500 NIS.
Now, Rust is suing for damages to his property in addition to physical injuries, pain, anguish and suffering.
