As ‘קופת מתן בסתר אלעד’ officials prepare to launch their Yomim Nora’im campaign, rabbonim from Elad met with HaGaon HaRav Chaim Kanievsky Shlita to seek the gadol hador’s guidance.
The rav’s talmid, HaRav Shmuel Baruch Ganot Shlita presented their questions to Rav Kanievsky, including a question if preference should be given to baalei tshuva for the yomim tovim.
The rav explained that special attention should be given to the needs of those returning to the fold, those who have abandoned a secular lifestyle to move into the chareidi city. He quoted ספר החינוך and the obligation to support the convert.
The rav spoke of the need of checking the standard of living of possible recipients as well as their needs, to certify that are living a regular standard as opposed to those whose lifestyle is too high. The rav explains that such a person should not be given funds, but it must be explained that in such a case, they are not entitled to assistance.
Ladaat.net quotes the rav as saying “והכל לפי הענין”.

A very smart and wise set of principles from the Rav that we all should take to heart. I’m tired of hearing pleas for tzadakah coming from the regular crew of askanim who fly over to the U.S. from Eretz Yisroel every motzi shabbos and beg for tzadakah for their respective mosdos while we read about the big rabbonim from some of these same mosdos flying first class with their gabboim, going off the the Swiss Alps for summer vacations etc. Rav Kanievsky, shlita, is an exception and lives a very simple life with few indulgences. He speaks with moral authority. The same ehrlich yidden who scream about tuition for their children in yeshiva also manage to find money for big homes, vans, expensive sheitels and shtreimlach etc.
