Second Newark Flight In 13 Hours Forced To Abort

Just 13 hours after an engine fire forced United Airlines to abort a flight out of Newark on Saturday night, another United flight from Newark was forced to turn around this morning because of smoke in the cockpit.

Both flights landed safely and no one was hurt in either case. But the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating Saturday’s incident and awaiting an internal review from United on today’s aborted flight.

Today’s incident involved United Flight 409 to Seattle, which took off at 8:55 a.m., only to set down again at Newark Liberty International Airport 20 minutes later, after smoke entered the cockpit, said Chris Valens, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which runs the airport.
