A Liberty man has been sentenced to prison for possessing a Sefer Torah stolen last December from Monticello’s Landfield Avenue Shul – a story first reported by YWN.
Sullivan County Judge Mike McGuire sentenced 41-year-old Christopher Colvill, to 3 to 6 years in prison. he was also slapped with a $5,000 fine.
Colvill, who has a lengthy rap sheet dating to 1989, was suspected of stealing the Torah but never charged with the burglary. He pleaded guilty to felony criminal possession of stolen property in May.
Three weeks after being stolen, the Sefer Torah was returned to the Shul, in a celebration filled with singing and dancing.
