Magen David Adom Blood Bank officials report a nationwide blood shortage. Summer vacation and increased travel abroad have resulted in a sharp decline in blood donors. Blood bank officials fear that if the current situation worsens, it may compel postponing elective surgical procedures.
MDA receives a daily average of 1,400 units of blood and during the summer, the number has declined considerably, not giving an exact figure. Officials add that once blood is given, it takes 36 hours for processing until it is ready for distribution to hospitals.
A new blood donation center was opened in Jerusalem this week, a facility that is accessible for the disabled.
Blood bank officials point out that donating blood not only can save a life, but the donor is insured in the event s/he or first line relatives require blood for a year from the donation date.
MDA Director-General Eli Bin calls on the tzibur to donate blood as soon as possible.

This would be a great opportunity for Chareidi Leaders of all camps to organize a “mass campaign” for their constituents to donate blood. It should be done in a way to attract as much publicity as possible. This will create some “good will” with the “share the burden” crowd.
