A woman who has been an agunah for eight for eight years received a get from the Beersheva Rabbinical Court last week. According to the Yisrael HaYom report, the woman, who was in her 40s when the story began eight years ago asked her husband to give her a get. She told the rabbonim her husband is a con artist and she cannot live with him any longer. She explained how she was defrauded, telling her he is a pilot and causing her to lose a significant sum of money before running off abroad and leaving her an agunah.
The rabbinical court hired private detectives to investigate the husband, and last week they reported a break in the case after the woman received the results of a blood test performed on her husband.
After checking it was learned the husband was hospitalized in Yosef Tal Hospital in Eilat and the results of blood tests were sent to the home. The beis din made its way to the hospital, but not before arranging with police to make certain the recalcitrant husband does not take off prior to their arrival.
It is explained the main problem is the husband had to appoint shluchim to represent him to give the get. To accomplish this, the beis din used an iPhone and a video phone call to accomplish their mission. The women was given her get on Thursday, 21 Menachem Av 5772 after eight years of pain and anguish.
The rabbonim of the beis din admit using the iPhone is not a l’chatchila situation, but in this case they were matir it to release the women from her state after so many years.
