Stop-Sign Cameras May Be Coming To A City Near You

Thinking about rolling through that stop sign the next time nobody’s looking? Think again.

On top of red-light cameras and speed cameras, some jurisdictions are starting to install stop-sign cameras in their seemingly never-ending quest to monitor drivers and catch them in the act of some ticket-able offense. California has already rolled out cameras at stop signs. Maryland and the nation’s capital could be next.

Maryland right now allows only red-light cameras, but the town of Glen Echo wants the state legislature to expand government’s reach to include photo-ticketing for intersections with stop signs.

  1. Taking into account that the use of traffic monitering cameras has been demonstrated to reduce accidents and save lives, the story’s quip “…in their seemingly never-ending quest to monitor drivers and catch them in the act of some ticket-able offense…” is a wee bit off the mark.

  2. This is just one symptom of a society in decline

If everyone had the integrity to follow traffic laws, these cameras would not be necessary. Disregard for traffic laws keeps on increasing, and it especially hurts when committed by frum Yidden.

Coming up next? Cameras to check if you signaled before making a turn.

  3. Make no mistake about it. These enforcement tools are for REVENUE and sold to the public as safety! This is just another way for mismanaged, pension bloated, cash strapped cities to pull money out of its citizens pockets to pay for their incompetence self interests.

  4. YonasonW #1 is correct. It saves lives and that’s all that matters or counts. Go for it. Everywhere.

And, yes, have cameras even for signaling before turns.

  5. My wife’s coworker was traveling a few week ago on a new york city MTA bus. There was no seat available so he had to stand. The bus made a short stop he flew to the front and banged his head and got unconscious and in a few hours he died from his injuries. No one will get a ticket for not wearing seat belts. If the seat belt law is for safety then standing in a bus is safer then siting in a car even if the person died on the bus. Also the safest vehicle ride is with a motor bike again no seat belts needed. Unless the entire law is for revenue then since most vehicles are cars they are right with the law.

  6. mayerfreund “…the safest vehicle ride is with a motor bike again no seat belts needed…” You are tragically mistaken my friend…ask any emergency room physician. I owned motorcycles for 15 years, selling my last bike when I was 42…so I have no bias against two-wheeled vehicles…but to say they are safer than cars is…nuts.

  7. How would this work? You would need a video camera – not a regular camera. How can you tell if someone stopped or not on a camera.

  8. #1, cameras have NOT been demonstrated to reduce accidents and save lives. On the contrary, they make things worse. And the firms that operate the cameras have been caught shortening the yellow light cycle in order to catch more people on red. The cameras are purely a revenue-raising measure, and they are a menace.

  9. I really don’t get what the big deal is. Who cares what the reason is??? Follow the law and you won’t get a ticket. Break the law, and you might get a ticket – one that you deserve. If I get a ticket for not stopping by a stop sign, I may be frustrated, but at the end of the day, you MUST stop at a stop sign! Why does it make a difference if they install these for money? And Dooalldel, if you don’t want to give in to Mayor Bloomberg, follow the law!
