Priest in Baghdad Attempts Rescue of Torah Scrolls

The largest collection of Torah scrolls is not somewhere in New York or Jerusalem. Instead, it’s in Baghdad.

In a basement in Baghdad, there are 365 Torah scrolls, apparently taken from the Jewish community over years of brutal treatment at the hands of the Iraqi populace. An Anglican priest, Canon Andrew White of Baghdad, discovered these scrolls and has been working to bring them back to the Jewish community. Canon White has taken this on in addition to his active role in saving the few surviving Jews in Iraq’s capital city and preserving the sanctity of the synagogues of Baghdad. But could this task be too hard for one man?

This week in Ami Magazine, the journalist Ari Werth describes his exclusive interviews with Canon White and search for the truth about the lost Torah scrolls of the Iraqi Jews.
