Twenty-four firefighters and a civilian were injured after a fire – possibly caused by a lightning strike – broke out at a seven-story building in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn early Thursday.
More than 200 firefighters from 50 units battled the seven-alarm blaze across the street from Kings County Hospital Thursday, which led to the evacuation of hundreds of residents.
The FDNY was responding to a call of a lightning strike nearby when the call came in at 10:04 a.m. that another strike had hit a satellite dish on the New York Avenue building.
“There are reports of two lightning strikes. One was three blocks from here. And one was on this building. We are still confirming this one,” said Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano.
For hours, fire trucks and emergency personnel closed off several blocks around the building as smoke billowed through windows and the roof. Firefighters, hoisted by ladder trucks, went from floor to floor in an effort to contain the stubborn blaze with water being shot at the building from all sides.
BrooklynScoop.com interviewed numerous eyewitnesses who saw the lightening strike.
