IDF Spokesman Brigadier-General Yoav Mordechai on Monday, confirmed Israel’s concerns vis-à-vis Syria’s chemical weaponry telling Channel 2 News that it appears we are witnessing the final days of the Bashar al-Assad regime and despite last week’s attack eliminating a number of senior officials loyal to him, the Syrian army appears to remain loyal at this time.
Mordechai added that in recent meetings with IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz the question was “are we nearing the end of the end of the middle of the end. The question is not if the end is approaching but when”.
Mordechai explained the IDF is monitoring events with great interest, seeking to prevent chemical weapons falling into the hands of terrorists in the region, naming Hizbullah and the Global Jihad.
When asked to comment on the situation in Sinai following recent shooting attacks originating in Sinai, with the most recent this week against a bus carrying IDF soldiers, Mordechai stated it is “unstable” and it is becoming a breeding ground for terrorists from Gaza and elsewhere. He stated that as of now intelligence community officials are monitoring over 20 terror alerts for that area.
Regarding the attack against Israelis in Burgas Bulgaria, Mordechai stated that Hizbullah continues efforts to strike out at Israel wherever it can.
