Some were too optimistic perhaps amid reports of a possible compromise pertaining to the planned eviction of the Sanhedrin Talmid Torah to allocate the building for the overcrowded Beis Yaakov Yoshon. When the case came before the High Court of Justice on Wednesday, 8 Elul, it became clear the machlokes is far from being settled.
A three-justice panel heard the petition brought before the court by Jerusalem City Hall against the Interior Ministry, which is refusing to issue permits for the Beis Yaakov to move in, preferring to back the Sephardi talmid torah being ousted in the move and to refuse to cooperate with City Hall.
The court recommended that the city drop the petition, which it did, preferring this over having the court rule against City Hall’s interests. The court however was critical of the handling of the matter by the city, and the lack of involvement of parents of the talmidim in the talmid torah.
The court recommended that the city work with Chinuch Atzmai and parents and the Interior Ministry, to reach an understanding on exactly how they plan to divide the pie to the satisfaction of all involved.
