Powerful storms have rumbled into the Tri-State, bringing with them thunder and lightning and lots of damage.

Wires and trees were reported down in Dutchess and Middlesex counties. In Nassau and Passaic counties, trees were reported down, some landing on cars.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Connecticut, northeast New Jersey and southeast New York until 9 p.m.

The storms knocked out power to some customers in the northeast Bronx, Con Ed said.

At 4:30 p.m., LIPA had 2,844 outages. Con Ed reported 1,368, JCP&L reported 16,256, PSE&G had 8,000 mostly in Passaic county, Orange & Rockland reported 3,990 and CL&P 34,664.

However, the storms are also bringing some relief from the heat.

Temperatures at Laguardia Airport hit 101 degrees Wednesday. The previous 100 degree record at Laguardia was set in 2006. It hit 104 degrees in Newark, breaking the old 100 degree record set back in 1982.

A heat advisory also remains in effect until 6 p.m.
