Crossing the Hudson just got a lot tougher, thanks to a massive construction project on the Alexander Hamilton Bridge that promises three months of traffic woes.
Major rehab work on the city’s busiest river crossing means major delays for New Jersey drivers crossing the George Washington Bridge into New York – but it won’t impact traffic heading the other way.
The Alexander Hamilton, which crosses the Harlem River and connects Manhattan to the Bronx, is the main thoroughfare for eastbound drivers crossing the George Washington Bridge and getting onto the I-95.
At times, traffic caused by the project could back up for miles into New Jersey.
To avoid some of the pain, New Jersey drivers are advised to use any of the three Staten Island crossings. Motorists from the north are advised to use the Tappan Zee Bridge.
The work on the Alexander Hamilton involves steel reinforcement and deck replacement. Construction started Saturday and should be completed by October.
