The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America — the largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization, representing 1,000 nonprofits — applauds the security funds allocated through the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NSGP) of the Urban Area Security Initiative. This year, $9.7 million was allocated to this program, with a significant portion of the funds going towards Jewish nonprofits. Of the 144 nonprofits receiving grants, 97 organizations (or 67 percent) are affiliated with the Orthodox community. Nonprofits will be using these grants for target hardening and preparedness training — both are necessary for ensuring the safety and security of Orthodox Jewish institutions and communities.
This year, the Orthodox Union assisted many Orthodox community schools and synagogues apply for the funding opportunity.
The Orthodox Union was among those who spearheaded the creation of the NSGP, in partnership with the Jewish Federations of North America, six years ago, and has consistently worked for Congress’ annual appropriation of these funds.
Nathan Diament, OU Executive Director for Public Policy, stated: “In this time of need, it is imperative that our institutions are able to be secure. We applaud the Department of Homeland Security and Secretary Napolitano for her assistance in maintaining this important program. Similarly, we thank the Congressional leadership of Senators Lieberman, Cochran and Mikulski and Representatives Rogers and Price for assuring that the NSGP remains in the budget year after year.”
