NYC: Cab Rides Could Get More Expensive

Catching a cab in New York City could get much more expensive.

The NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission is meeting Monday to consider a 17 percent fare hike. Under the proposal, the base fare of $2.50 would not increase, but the mileage charge would.

A cab ride to or from JFK would increase from $45 to $52, and the surcharge for going to or from Newark Liberty International Airport would hike to $17.50, from $15. Surcharges would also be added for rush-hour and nighttime cab rides.

Monday’s public hearing will also explore the options of better health-care packages for cab drivers. The commission won’t vote on the fare hike until Thursday.
