New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo may be tight-lipped about his ambitions for a run at the White House, but his hand may have been tipped by another influential Democrat: his dad.
At a recent celebration of his 80th birthday, former New York Gov. Mario Cuomo discussed at length the possibility that his son may someday “have an opportunity to serve at a higher level, to serve the people of the United States,” several of the roughly 100 guests present told The New York Times.
He also called his son “the best governor in modern times.”
Andrew Cuomo has been deliberately tight-lipped about his plans for 2016.
The Times said Cuomo believes his father’s public flirtation with a White House bid in the late 1980s and early 1990s may have ultimately undermined his authority as governor of N.Y.
During an April press conference, Cuomo alluded to his father’s experience while tamping down speculation about his own national ambitions.

Any governor of New York unless he totally messes up is a potential presidential candidate. The same holds true of almost all the large states, and includes their United States Senators. Given the only other large state governor who is a Democrat is Jerry Brown (who will be 78 years old in 2016), Cuomo seems to be in a good position to run in 2016 assuming he is comfortably reelected in 2014. While New York is no longer the leading state like it used to be (I believe its fallen to third in population), having been elected in New York makes one “presidential” (OMG: does that include Chuck Schumer).
