Hazy July 4 Forecast, Severe Storms Possible During Fireworks

The Independence Day forecast for the tri-state area calls for heat, humidity and possible thunderstorms that could put a brief damper on firework displays.

The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular will go on, rain or shine, organizers said. But it may be delayed if there is lightning — if that’s the case, the show will be delayed until the lightning passes.

Forecasters say there’s a 30 percent risk of storms during the fireworks, so if you plan to watch outside, bring an umbrella. The extravaganza will be broadcast on NBC 4 New York beginning at 9 p.m.

Storms lingered Wednesday morning, especially east of town, and then as a cold front approaches, another round of thunderstorms may pop up in the afternoon and early evening. Storms should move through quickly, but they may produce hail, damaging winds and frequent lightning.

Independence Day also marks the start of the third heat wave of the summer, with oppressive heat and humidity settling in early. Temperatures will top out in the mid-90s, but it will feel like nearly 100 degrees at times.

That dangerous combination has prompted the National Weather Service to place the city under a heat advisory for Wednesday, urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid direct sunlight and avoid strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day.

Thursday is expected to be sunny and hot with a high of 93 degrees and the trend continues Saturday, with a high of 94 degrees and late thunderstorms possible. Temperatures cool off a bit Sunday, capping off in the high 80s.

Next week begins with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-80s.
