Iranian leaders are not the type of people associated with apologetic messages or in-depth explanations seeking to earn international approval and the long-range missile tests conducted by Tehran are no exception.
Iran on Monday, 12 Tammuz 5772 tested dozen surface-to-surface missiles (Shehab-3), those with a range of 2,000km (1,200 miles) — simply stated missiles that can reach Israel. Testing was also conducted on short-range Shehab-1 (300km) and Shehab-2 (500km) missiles.
The major military exercise is undoubtedly a message for Jerusalem and the United States as Tehran seeks to flex its military muscle to ward off a preemptive aerial strike against its nuclear facilities.
The Iranian message comes on the as Tehran is to renew nuclear talks with the six powerful nations, a clear statement of defiance. Nevertheless, Western powers continue to promote dialogue despite the realization a nuclear Iran is soon to become a reality, one that poses a threat to Israel and American interests alike.
Some of the missiles fired during the Revolutionary Guard exercise were aimed at simulated American bases like the ones found in the Gulf. Despite the low expectations surrounding the renewed talks the three-day military exercise may be interested as “a picture is worth a thousand words” as Iran signals it does not fear failure at the talks, always willing to use the military option.
In addition, Iran has established a major money laundering operation in Lebanon and according to the Wall Street Journal report, this permits funneling funds through shell companies in Lebanon, funds used to finance Islamic terrorism and drug activities, which generates additional revenue. The Iranian operation has all but destroyed Lebanon’s economy but this too continues as the international community speaks of “dialogue” and “sanctions”.
