Soldier Ousted from Command Course for Refusal to Nab Price Tag Vandals

A soldier who resides in Kochav Yair in the Binyamin Regional Council of Shomron was ousted from the ‘Makim’ NCO (non-commissioned officers) command course for his refusal to take part in an stakeout intended to apprehend ‘price tag’ vandals.

It is not at all uncommon to use soldiers taking part in courses to fill manpower shortages for limited periods of time and due to the shifting of manpower ahead of the eviction from Beit El’s neighborhood last week, Makim cadets were moved to Hebron to take part in the stakeout to apprehend price tag vandals.

The cadet, regarded as among the leaders in the course, told his officer “I did not join the IDF to apprehend residents of yishuvim, but to fight the enemy”. He explained that he cannot comply with the order to take part in the stakeout.

The soldier appeared to the brigade commander on Monday, 12 Tammuz 5772, and it was decided to immediately remove him from the Makim course. He is being returned to the Kfir Brigade for the time being pending a decision regarding his future in the military.

MK (Ichud HaLeumi) Dr. Michael Ben-Ari stated it is wrong to place soldiers in a position that they are called upon to arrest their fellow residents, highlighting this is not why they joined the army.

  1. #2, you should be “court marshalled”, whatever that means. (Your illiteracy tells us how much your opinion is worth.) This soldier should get a medal. He is there to protect Jews, not to harm them. In the conscription threads you’re probably one of those arguing that joining the IDF is a mitzvah; how do you square that with your comment now? If joining the IDF means having to do aveiros, then how can one advocate joining?

Besides which, it’s inappropriate for soldiers to be assigned police work (in the USA it’s illegal).

  2. peakman, it seems you would justify a soldier who states, “I was merely following orders”.
Soldiers should not be doing police work.
