Yated Control Case Reaches Israeli Court

The power struggle for control of Israel’s Hebrew Yated Ne’eman newspaper continues, now making its way to the Tel Aviv District Court. The veteran leaders of the newspaper have summoned the new leaders to the court and a hearing was held on Wednesday morning, 7 Tammuz 5772.

Each side came well armed with attorneys, with Justice Ruth Ronen hearing the case. According to media reports, the case will give significant weight to the opinion of Rav Yosef Chaim Kupshitz. The latter has signed documents showing his support for the new leadership, but on the other hand, the old leaders told the court there is a video from a meeting held two weeks ago in the Ramada Hotel during which Rav Kupshitz explained he is going to abstain from taking sides.

It appears R’ Kupshitz’s position is critical since at present, the operating board is comprised of Rav Baruch Shmuel Deutsch and Rav Tzvi Friedman, both siding with the old leadership and are viewed as loyalists to HaGaon HaRav Shmuel Auerbach. There is also Rav Moshe Elinson, who supports the new leadership and is loyal to HaGaon HaRav Aaron Leib Shteinman Shlita.

The court told the parties it would study the evidence and announce a decision. Both sides emerged confident of a victory.

  1. Why exactly is a “frum” daily newspaper going to a secular court and not a beis din? Isn’t this exactly the type of behavior that they would be negatively editorializing about if another pair of religious litigants would do?

  2. Is it possible that Rav Auerbach and Rav Steinmann do not know how much this fight escalated?!!? to secular courts presided by Justice Ruth…

I am told that gedolim are aware of everything happening in their circles, but there is no way they know about this!
