Crews building the city’s sixth largest skyscraper will celebrate a milestone Monday as they lift in place 4 World Trade Center’s final steel beam.
Four World Trade will be the first of the center’s structures to be completed since Sept. 11, 2001. Though most of the focus on the rebuilding has been on 1 World Trade, officials say Monday’s completion is a poignant reminder of how far New York City has come in the last decade.
According to management company Silverstein Properties, the sleek glass and steel office building is intended as an architectural backdrop to the Sept. 11 Memorial. The company says the trapezoidal building nearly disappears at some angles and at specific times of day, like a massive mirror reflecting the sky.
On Monday, the final steel beam, signed by members of the crews that helped build the tower, will be hoisted 977 feet in a ceremony that is as much a celebration for the future as a reminder of lower Manhattan’s tragic past.
Four World Trade is slated to open in 2012. About half the building has been leased to the city and Port Authority.
