Brooklyn – Every summer, during peak driving season, when people are travelling upstate or to resorts and vacation spots, we hear of instances where people were arrested for driving while having a suspended license. Most of the time, the situation is a misunderstanding or a completely innocent mistake that could’ve easily been avoided. For instance, it can happen when someone forgets to answer a traffic ticket or they thought that it’s being handled by a lawyer and it somehow got lost in the shuffle without them ever being aware of it.
To help prevent this from happening, Community Board 12 has teamed up with the 66 th Precinct and Boro Park Shomrim to provide license checks to anybody that wants. It’s simple, just come in to the Community Board office at 5910 13 th Avenue on Thursday, June 22 nd between 6:00 pm and 8:00 pm, hand your license to an officer, they will check it and let you know if it’s in good standing or you need to correct something. This way you can avoid all the embarrassment and heartache that come along with being arrested on the street, let alone, all the travel plans that are now potentially ruined.
As an added convenience this year, for those who can’t come in personally, CB12 is offering license checks by phone. Just call their office at 718-851- 0800 and they will get the results for you.
The Precinct will also be providing tips on keeping your property safe while being away during the summer vacation months. We hear every year from people that come home after a weekend away only to find their homes broken into and robbed of their valuable possessions. For that purpose, the Precinct’s Crime Prevention Team will be on-hand to give ideas and provide proven suggestions on how to secure your house and belongings.
“This is a great example of the Police Department and the community working hand in hand for the benefit of the public. I applaud Captain David Wall, Commanding Officer of the 66 th Precinct, for readily agreeing to our request and enthusiastically providing the resources needed to make this a success,” said Yidel Perlstein, Chairman of Community Board 12.
“The 66 th Precinct is always looking for new ways to better protect and serve our community. It is our pleasure to work with Community Board 12 to help avoid unnecessary arrests and prevent crime victimizations,” said Captain David Wall, Commanding Officer of the 66 th Precinct.
“As a coordinator of Boro Park Shomrim, I commend Community Board 12 for doing this great event of which we’re proud to be co-sponsors. Checking licenses is an excellent service to people who may not be aware they have summonses that haven’t been taken care of and their license got suspended as a result,” said Marc Katz. “I also want to thank the NYPD for all the great work they do and especially for partnering with us on this effort.”
