HaGaon HaRav Nissim Karelitz Shlita released a p’sak halacha that today, 20 Sivan, is not a preferred day to hold a chupah.
The gadol explained in past years, this was a day to remember difficult gezeiros, mentioning the ‘Tach V’tat’ massacres and the blood libel in the time of Rabbeinu Tam.
A member of the kehila close to the rav who wished to make a chasnah today was told by the rav to observe the day as one of aveilus on which we do not make chasnahs.
The rav explained that in our times, the day has been forgotten and most are unaware the day was declared a day of fasting. Since one asked regarding a chasnah, one should not hold a wedding before shekiyah, already the eve of the 21st.

This is also the date that MOST of the heilige yidden hy”d in the 3rd largest Hungarian city of Miskolc were sent to ….al kiddush Hash-m by the nazis yshm’vz.
How exactly is this supposed to be helpful by posting this on 20 Sivan in the afternoon? How do you think someone making a chasunah today feels now?
Other Poskim have written that the hakpadah is only to Poland and Russia, where the takana was enacted. However, in Galicia, the custom was always to make weddings on this day, as is the custom now in Bobov. Rav Tzinner discusses the issue at greater length. By the same token, we should aslo not marry on Sundays according to the Ramah in countries where there is a significant Eastern orthodox presence.. Most of the christians in the US are not Eastern orthodox, they are either Roman Catholic or Protestant. Eretz Yisroel may be a different matter…
uhhh… I have 3 weddings to attend today, 2 Ashkenazi and 1 Sefardi…!
I would think that is this were an issue, it would have been dealt with long before now. So why a psak now? Maybe it was psak for that individual.
If they are making a chasanah today, I doubt they have time to read this now anyway.
Mike, if a Chasuna takes place today, they can make the Chuppah after shkiah so it’s already Chaf Aleph.
I just came home from a beautiful chasunah.
I was aware that it’s the 20th of Sivan, which was a fast day in Europe.
Is a website the right venue to disseminate halachic p’sakim?
I highly doubt the veracity of this report, as the Chazon Ish said that we are not capable of making a Yom Taanis for all of Klal Yisroel. To do so one has to be on the level of Chazal.
Ok
But PLEASE don’t tell all this this to the nice families that are making weddings today – 20th of Sivan.
Thank you
Let’s be clear. YWN may mention this and other halachic issues, and there may be what to discuss.
But this mention is *NOT* a psak halacha (and certainly not universally applicable). What matters is not what’s anywhere on the Internet or elsewhere, but only that which your Rav tells you. Pirkei Avos: Asei Licha Rav. Ask your LOR. See what he says.
So if your Rav tells you to choose a different day, then good for you. But if your Rav tells you it’s not a problem to make a wedding today, then that’s just as good. Yes, just as good.
Other Poskim have written that the hakpadah is only to Poland and Russia, where the takana was enacted.
Note that Rabbenu Tam lived neither in Poland nor in Russia.
