‘Miracle’ Pilot Trashes Bloomberg’s Plan For Garbage Transfer Station Near LaGuardia Airport

The pilot who pulled off the Miracle on the Hudson landing is lashing out against the city’s plans for a trash-transfer station near LaGuardia Airport. Captain Chesley Sullenberger is speaking out in a radio ad that hits the air today.

Sullenberger says the station will cause more bird strikes by attracting birds into the paths of oncoming flights, putting thousands of lives at risk.

“The best mitigation techniques currently are try to discourage the birds from roosting near the airport and in terms of the migratory birds like the Canada geese that we struck on Flight 1549 over the Hudson, they could be essentially anywhere,” Sullenberger told CBS News.

In January 2009, Sullenberger ditched his plane into the Hudson River after Canada geese took out its engines.

A spokesperson for the mayor says a trash station was located near La Guardia for years until 2001 without major bird strike problems, and the new station will be even safer.
