A report released by the Department of Homeland Security Monday reveals gaps and inconsistencies in the reporting of security breaches at U.S. airports.
New Jersey Sen. Frank Lautenberg, who requested the investigation after a series of breaches at Newark Liberty Airport, said the findings identify a “gaping hole” in airport security and that al-Qaida was still determined to “exploit aviation security gaps.”
According to the report, corrective action was taken for just 53 percent of security breaches at six U.S. airports between Jan. 1 2010 and May 31, 2011.
The report also noted that different airports used different terminology and categorization to identify the same security breach, and that some security breaches were never reported at all.
