Israel: Traffic Signal Cameras Recording Vehicular Speed Too

Cameras posted at traffic signals that once photographed drivers passing a red light only are now also taking pictures documenting the speed of drivers exceeding the speed limit. According to a Channel 2 News report, the reason is that during a one week period nine cameras documented that over 52,000 drivers passed a traffic signal camera while exceeding the 90 KPH speed limit at those intersections. Police add that only 500 drivers were given a summons and therefore, the intersection cameras will now also monitor vehicular speed.

During March and April 2012, police issued over 4,200 speeding tickets via cameras on a number of roads, amounting to an income of 3 million NIS.

Two new cameras begin operating today, Monday. One is situated on Route 5 and the second at N’vei Yamin Junction. They will monitor compliance with the traffic signal and vehicular speed.

  1. It’s unfortunate that things have come to this, but the way many people drive (and tailgate at high speeds) throughout Israel, cameras like these are a good thing. In North America, cameras also photograph the licence plates and tickets are sent by mail. I think that would be even better!

  2. In America these cameras are a disaster, and serve only to boost municipal revenue. I wonder whether that is true in Israel too.

  3. The cameras in Israel are a deterrent. I drive by them everyday and the entire road slows down and then speeds up once past it. If there is a particularly dangerous curve or intersection, this is a great way to get people to slow down.

The iPhone app Waze stays up to date on all cameras, has great voice and visual turn by turn direction and will route you around traffic Jetsons style. I highly recommend it.
