Former Queens State Senator Monserrate Pleads Guilty To Fraud Charges

Former Queens State Senator Hiram Monserrate pled guilty Friday to conspiracy and mail fraud charges related to his alleged use of City Council grants to fund his failed senate primary race. He entered the plea during an appearance in Manhattan federal court.

Investigators say Monserrate directed $300,000 to the Latino Initiative for Better Resources and Empowerment.

However, $100,000 of that went to his campaign.

Monserrate was kicked out for the State Senate in 2010 after he was found guilty of misdemeanor assault for dragging his girlfriend through an apartment building.

He was acquitted of felony charges he slashed her in the face and was sentenced to three years probation.

Monserrate faces up to 27 months behind bars.

A sentencing is scheduled for September.
